Despite what modern readers assume, this ebi refers not to shrimp but to ebi-kazura, an old word for wild mountain grapes. The color appears in Heian-era literature as an aristocratic shade for silk robes and is closely associated with the layered kasane color schemes described in the Tale of Genji.
